The following are the biographies of Engineering Faculty.

JAWDAT TASHAN, PH.D., P. ENG.

Associate Professor, Dean of Academic Affairs

Dr. Jawdat Tashan completed his Ph.D. at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. He is now an Associate Professor of structural engineering in the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Metro College of Technology. At the same time he also serves as the dean of academic affairs of Metro College of Technology.

Dr. Tashan worked as a lecturer at Monash University from 2010 to 2011. He held teaching and research positions at Monash University and Swinburne University of Technology. His research interests lie in the area of structural strength assessment and retrofitting using advanced composite materials. His studies ranges from theory to design to implementation. In recent years, he has focused on designing non-destructive testing techniques (using the state-of-art infrared devices) for evaluating and assessing concrete and steel structures that have been strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer systems. Dr. Tashan published many technical papers in international journals and conferences.

Dr. Tashan has vast experience in engineering construction, consultation, and design. He has served as project manager for more than 40 projects. Dr. Tashan was responsible for policies, programs, and technical expertise in the execution of over CA$2 billion of design and construction programs. He has received numerous performance awards during his academic and professional career.

ZIAUDDIN MOHAMMAD, B.ENG.

Civil Engineering Instructor

Mr. Mohammad has more than 10 years of work experience in infrastructure and civil engineering. He has worked extensively on road design and construction projects, including two-story, and multi-story residential buildings. During his career in civil engineering, he has been actively engaged in project management and supervision, engineering analysis, and project estimation. He has been teaching at Metro College since 2007 and is very popular with and well respected by the students as a knowledgeable and approachable instructor.

ELENA RAMIREZ, B. ENG., P. ENG.

Civil Project Instructor

Ms. Ramirez is a civil engineer graduating from McMaster University with more than eight years of experience in the Civil Engineering field. Her experience includes municipal infrastructure design, hydrologic and hydraulics modelling, site plan design, subdivision design and the production of AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and specifications. She has been teaching the Civil Design Project course as a part-time instructor at Metro College of Technology since 2016. She teaches Civil 3D software using an innovative, flexible and positive teaching style, understanding the needs of students with diverse backgrounds. Ms. Ramirez is currently working as a full-time Project Engineer for a Land Development Consulting Firm in Toronto, Ontario.

AHSANUDDIN AHMED, B.ENG., P. ENG.

Structural Engineering Instructor

Mr. Ahmed holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and worked as a senior design engineer at a construction consulting company in Toronto for more than 20 years. He has been a professional engineer designated by Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. As a part-time instructor at Metro College of Technology, he teaches STAAD Pro and structural engineering design project. His students discover that his structural design experience is practical and enjoyable. Specifically, he is very adept at using STAAD Pro. He is very popular with his students because he is a teacher who can share his knowledge, skills, and experience with his students to well prepare them for the workplace.

ALIREZA SHIRAZI, PHD, P. ENG.

Mechanical Design Instructor, Associate Professor

For over 18 years, Dr. Shirazi has held several positions in industry as R&D engineer, senior project engineer and engineering manager. He worked on several projects with HITACHI Canada, IBM Canada, Microsoft, Motorola, on advanced structures and microelectronics packages. Prior to joining Academia in 2019, he was an Engineering Manager at Welbilt, overseeing NPI projects. These projects focused on product and process optimization, fatigue analysis, structural and drive system components design and manufacturing processes. For the last 10 years, he has been using advanced design software systems such as SolidWorks, CATIA and ANSYS in his design projects.

Mr. Shirazi received his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Ryerson University (Canada) in 2011, master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Ryerson University (Canada) in 2011 and bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from IUST (IRAN) in 1999. He is currently serving as the co-chair of the 2020 Symposium on Advances in Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation of Manufacturing Processes for Advanced Manufacturing Conference (MSEC 2020). Mr. Shirazi is a registered professional engineer in Canada and is a recipient of several national and international awards.

His major research interests include advanced research and development, design for manufacturing, simulation of manufacturing and operation for reliability and durability and materials constitutive modeling. Currently Mr. Shirazi is a senior lecturer for Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Metro College of Technology.

yasser elkay, PHD

Mechanical Engineering Instructor

Dr. Yasser Elkady has more than 20 years of experience in the industry and academia. He graduated with a Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. He was granted the PhD degree in mechanical engineering from Auburn University in Alabama, USA. Dr. Elkady specializes in mechanical engineering applications with focus on CAD/CAM/CAE. Dr. Elkady taught several courses at Sheridan College, University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), Canada and Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai, UAE. He also mentored many award winning graduation projects. Now he is teaching the mechanical engineering design and technology courses at Metro college of Technology.

JOHN SCARBOROUGH, Dipl.

CNC and MasterCAM Instructor

Mr. Scarborough brings to Metro College of Technology 30 years of manufacturing experience in CNC programming, CNC machining and mechanical design. He holds General Machinist, Mold Maker, Mastercam® and SolidWorks® certifications. With his CNC Programming and Mastercam® skills, John has had the opportunity to be involved with the automotive, aerospace, plastic container, robotics and footwear industries. Currently, he operates his own consulting business, where he offers mechanical CAD design, CNC programming and customized business services. Currently he is teaching CNC programming at Metro College of Technology. He enjoys working with students and sharing his many years of CNC programming and CNC machining knowledge along with valuable industry insider tips. He is a favorite with our students as he delivers extensive real world working experience, which students take away to build their new careers upon.

ELENA GEORGESCU, M.SC., B. A.

Metrology Instructor

Ms. Elena Georgescu holds M. Sc. in mechanical engineering and a bachelor in adult education from Polytechnic University of Bucharest, and a bachelor in education from Queen’s University. She worked as mechanical designer in industry in the field of robotics in Bucharest, Romania and in Toronto, Canada using SolidWorks, FEA and AutoCAD. At York University she taught AutoCAD and designed satellites using SolidWorks.

Presently she is working as Professor at George Brown College, Seneca College, Humber College , Metro College and Ryerson University teaching CAD courses such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks She also teaches Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Geometric Dimensions and Tolerances, Jig and Fixture design, Engineering Drawing, and Metrology. In 2015 she was awarded with “Teaching Excellence Award” in recognition of outstanding academic excellence at Centennial College.

RAMANA RAJASOORIAR, B. ENG.

CNC Operation Lab Instructor

Mr. Ramana Rajasooriar holds an engineering degree in mechanical manufacturing. He has more than 20 years of working experience in a CNC workshop. His expertise includes CNC programming and CNC set up operation. He is the CNC workshop manager of a manufacturing company in the GTA. He also works as a CNC Operation Lab Instructor for Metro College of Technology on a part-time basis
